Adapting CBT for clients aged 60+

Adapting CBT for Older Adults
March 2026

Life after 60 presents unique challenges.

Some impact the therapeutic process, such as memory issues or depression-like symptoms.

Others might make up the content of your work together, such as distressing transitions involving loss, health or mobility problems, and identity shifts that are difficult to navigate.

Without tools for understanding and addressing these barriers—and relating in an authentic way to clients—progress often falters, and frustration builds.

To ensure therapy feels aligned and progress is adequately supported, clinicians need to understand this specific phase of life, how common challenges present clinically, and how to adjust their conceptualization and treatment accordingly.

Adapting CBT for Older Adults, a brand-new course offered by Praxis Continuing Education and Training, will give you the knowledge and skills to help bridge these gaps.

Julie Erickson, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, author, and educator dedicated to reshaping societal and clinical perspectives on aging. Her book, The Aging Well Workbook for Anxiety and Depression, is a seminal CBT self-help resource for older adults. She delivers workshops internationally, and her research has been featured in journals such as Aging and Mental Health, Depression and Anxiety, and Cognitive and Behavioral Practice.

In this training, Julie will lead an exploration of the conceptual, practical, and ethical dimensions of age-informed care using CBT. You’ll gain critical context about late life and how it impacts therapy, including common misconceptions and how to harness strengths, as well as specific tools for creating developmentally appropriate case conceptualizations and treatment plans.

Join four weekly sessions starting March 20 and learn how to:

  • Build stronger therapeutic alliances with clients in later life by providing affirming, developmentally tailored therapy
  • Spend more time addressing problems that are actually central to presenting issues thanks to more accurate case conceptualizations
  • Support better retention and engagement by structuring therapy more effectively for older adults
  • Challenge negative beliefs about aging, identify strengths, and help clients move boldly toward the lives they want to lead
  • Use novel and adapted interventions that work better for those in late life to decrease symptom severity and increase acceptance and self-confidence

Weekly sessions will be held over Zoom, and 8 CE hours are available.
