Call for Participation! The WHO Global Clinical Practice Network invites Psychologists and Physicians to join the network and participate in a CIHR-funded study on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their professional practice.

The WHO Global Clinical Practice Network

The Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse of the World Health Organization initially established the Global Clinical Practice Network (GCPN) in order to field test the mental health specialist chapter of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). With the ICD-11 nearing its completion, GCPN is pivoting to becoming a resource for participatory global mental health research and training in recognition of its extensive reach and diverse composition.

As of September 2020, the GCPN had over 15,500 members from 159 countries, representing all regions of the world and the major mental health disciplines. Currently, less than 500 mental health professionals (primarily Psychologists and Physicians/Psychiatrists) from Canada are registered in the GCPN. We would like to see this number increase, and are committed to improving the representation of Canadian mental health.

CIHR-funded research on COVID-19

Our first collaborative international project under the new direction of the GCPN will examine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the current working conditions of psychologists and physicians across the globe including their well-being and work-related stressors, exposure to violence, institutional policies, and use of telehealth services to care for patients. This study is supported by the COVID-19 Rapid Response Funding Opportunity and will be measured across three time points; the first wave of data collection has already been completed.

Results of the survey research will be shared with the Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI) to complement analyses of the mental health and health human resources capacity implications of COVID-19. This information will be vitally important for developing sound policies to protect our mental health workforce in Canada
