Avoidance and Regulating Our Emotions

With Amanda Meier

Registered Social Worker, Private Practice

And

Andreia Barreiro

Registered Psychotherapist, Private Practice

For the past 2+ years, we have been facing collective loss, profound pain, and ongoing uncertainty. In the face of chaos and grief, we often resort to avoidance as a way of coping with overwhelming emotions. This protective mechanism can be momentarily effective, and at the same time result in unhelpful long-term consequences. Avoiding experiencing and processing our emotions may result in increased anxiety, low mood, interpersonal difficulties, as well as issues with self-esteem. Although more and more studies substantiate the benefits of embracing our emotions as they are, we struggle to put this knowledge into practice. This struggle is experienced by people from all walks of life, and we can all benefit from exploring how to move towards healthier and more helpful ways of coping. Join Amanda Meier and Andreia Barreiro on Thursday, May 5 between 12-1pm EST as they lead an important discussion about the impact of avoidance and the importance of regulating our emotions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Discuss the different ways in which we avoid our emotions
  • Showcase the impact avoiding our emotions takes on the individual
  • Understand why we tend to turn to avoidance in times of stress
  • Learn how to identify and choose healthier coping mechanisms

Date: May 5, 2022 – 12pm ET, 9am PT

Duration: 1-hour (45-minute presentation followed by a 15-minute Q&A)
