Volunteer Opportunity – Canada Games

The Canada Games will be held in Winnipeg July 28 – August 13, 2017.  The Canada Games is a multi-sport experience, designed to expose athletes to this format.  At the Canada Games, provinces compete against each other and travel as a delegation.  The participants stay in an athlete’s village, eat together, have accreditation and do everything else you would experience at other larger multi-sport games such as the Commonwealth, Pan American or Olympic games.  Many participants at larger games are alumni of a Canada Games experience.

Every multi-sport games include a medical team to ensure participant needs get taken care of for the duration of competition.  Medical personnel may travel with individual delegations, but the Canada Games Council also provides overarching care.  More recently, psychological service has been included as a component of the medical service team.

Dr. Adrienne Leslie-Toogood is in charge of psychological service delivery at the 2017 Canada Games.  She is looking for psychologists who have an interest in being a member of the psychology team.  Training would be provided at no cost including:

  • Mental Health First Aid (16 hours)
  • Crisis Response Training (3 hours)
  • Understanding the culture of sport (1 hours)
  • Ethics and sport psychology (2 hours)

Please note this is a volunteer opportunity, although clothing and training will be provided, in addition to rich memories from being involved in a multi-sport games.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please email Dr. Adrienne Leslie-Toogood (adrienne@cscm.ca) by Friday, September 16th

Please include:

  • Competencies or training you have that will be beneficial for this experience
  • Past experience in sport (as a participant or professional)
  • Specific things you would be most interested in gaining from this experience

Dr. Leslie-Toogood will be in Rio at the Paralympics until Friday, September 18th.  Inquiries will be answered and interested parties will be contacted after that time.
